I need a sixth, and a seventh, star: this book is wonderful! Mr. Davies writes knowledgeably and without bias about the history of the left in British politics. To do this and not produce a dry book for specialists only, is a master stroke. This is a book which should be read by every British subject.

I thought that I had a fair knowledge of the formation, many rises and equal number of falls of the Labour Party, but I certainly see many of these events in a different light thanks to this book. The edition that I have goes from the period prior to the formation of the Labour Party, right up until Tony Blair's election as party leader. It covers, not just the Labour Party, but the entire left in Britain and is to be most admired for its lack of an air of preaching. This is not an excuse for the left, or an assault, it is simply the facts; the reader can then decide the moral issues.… (mehr)
