Sugar Sands (of the Michigan Coast to Coast Mystery series) is written by Deb Davies. Sugar Sands is set against the backdrop of Lake Michigan's beautiful sunset coast with a group of friends on a leisurely getaway. The book centers around the group who find their relaxing getaway turning into a nightmarish adventure when they meet an ailing writer who's haunted by the apparitions of children. When individuals begin mysteriously vanishing, the vacationers are thrust into a desperate search against the clock to uncover the missing people before time runs out. This novel weaves together a tale of mystery, with regional flair and the unexpected dark side of a summer retreat. I found it was a slow starter for me but I eventually caught on to the conversation and the story started to evolve into an interesting read that I liked. This book is number three in a series but each can be read as standalones. For those in pursuit of a decent mystery story enriched with the essence of Michigan's charm, 'Sugar Sands' is a good read. Thank you to the author and LibraryThing for my copy to review.… (mehr)

What can I say? I received this book free from LibraryThing in exchange for an honest review. I assume this book was self-published as I cannot imagine it getting past an editor. The beginning is a jumbled, incoherent conversation between people who have not even been properly introduced. Oh sorry.....was I supposed to read some previous books first so I'd know who they were and what the heck they are talking about? I was about to abandon this book, which is something I seldom do, but suddenly, in chapter six, a story began and it caught my interest. Then the perfectly normal story became supernatural. That was okay, but then things got weirder. I don't think this author likes men as there is not one normal one in this entire book. Even the one that seems the most normal goes completely off the rails before this story ends. And though all the loose ends get neatly tied up, the weird conversations come back at the end. Weirder than ever, I must say. Sorry, but I can't recommend this one.… (mehr)

This book starts out with a long conversation that I think may make no sense unless you have read some of Deb Davies previous books. It was a total mess trying to figure out the multitude of characters being discussed in the first chapter and the chapter was one very long conversation. There was a nice defense of the Pit Bull dog breed with which I totally agree but putting it in the beginning of the book with this endless conversation is not the way to get me interested in meat of the story. There was simply no atmosphere, just endless chatter.… (mehr)

Sugar sands by Deb Davies.

This is a not-so-cozy mystery as a follow up to the author's previous novels Northern Lights and White Nights. I haven't read her previous books, but it would have been helpful, as she refers to them quite often.

I enjoyed the setting at Michigan's coastline, I could sense the author's love for this location and usually like stories that can transport me to another place.

Otherwise, as I started reading, I felt a bit thrown into the dialogs and was confused to what was happening. The writing style was much stronger in the middle of the novel, but the plot was somewhat bizarre. The style changed from funny to adventurous to supernatural to even horror. This mystery tried to be to much at once.

Thank you BHC Press for sending me this ebook for my early review.. All opinions are my own.
