NCLA Review: This book is a combination of a biography; a review and analysis of Thomas Merton’s writings on several topics including technology, war and the monastery and a discussion by the author on the role of monasteries. Merton was a Trappist monk and a contemplative. A contemplative is one who reflects. I think that Merton entered the monastery, not to escape from the world, but to view and think about the world and God’s role in it more objectively. He read and wrote voraciously; he had many visitors; he corresponded with many people and he traveled outside the monastery on a number of occasions. I think that reading about Merton’s beliefs requires a thoughtful approach. This is not a book for someone new to Thomas Merton. But for someone who is already familiar with his life and beliefs and wants to know more, it could be very helpful. Rating: 3 —JC… (mehr)
