Doesn't feel like a typical athlete's book. It feels like he wrote it himself. Very honest and I found it and him compelling. We are on different planes with regard to religion, but I came away feeling that Mr. Dickey is a good man trying to be the best he can be in all aspects of his life. A great read for a fan of baseball in general, The New York Mets in particular and most of all; life.

I love baseball and consequently have read a fair amount of baseball bios. For the most part they were about some of the most celebrated and well known stars of the game. What sets Dickey's bio apart is that he's spent most of his 15 years in baseball in the minor leagues. Dickey is no star, and so what the book comes to be about is perseverance. Despite all the odds stacked against him Dickey refuses to give up his dream of being an established major league pitcher.
This was a nice refreshing change of pace from the previous baseball bios I've read. Well done R.A. Keep it up, and Lets Go Mets !… (mehr)

R.A. has certainly led an interesting life, as chronicled by this book. A lot of it has been written about in the media already, the sexual abuse, finding a syringe in the locker room, and the abuse is definitely a central issue throughout the book. R.A. is a little heavy on the religion aspect, which doesn't jibe to well with me, but the book isn't about me, it's about him. Since religion is a big factor in his life, it also factors largely into the book. His book also has those little sidebars that I hate in other books, but didn't mind in this one, because in other books they fall into the middle of a chapter. His sidebars come after the chapter and last a page or too, definitely not as distracting as they are in the other books I have reported on.
All in all, he tells a good story, from his beginning, to top prospect status, to medical marvel, to journeyman, to the present. Definitely an enjoyable book and I think any baseball fan will find it as such.

3.5 stars. What a story. No, this isn't a gorgeously written book, but the R.A.'s story of perseverance, faith, and learning what it means to live a life authentically makes it a great read.
