diverse picture book (colors, sharing, emotions; for toddlers ages 18 months and up?)
*Prominently features diverse characters: Ruby has dark skin and dark brown, straight hair; Benji has light skin and light hair. A third child, Guy, introduced at the very end, is Black.
* Would work for toddler storytime (or a short book for preschool storytime). Dynamic pictures and very short, simple sentences, plus a "sharing" theme that parents of both groups will appreciate.

Irene Dickson's first book, Blocks, is a very popular toddler title at my library and I think her new book will prove to be equally attractive to little listeners as well.

The white boy on the cover is the only character in the book, besides a black girl who appears in the last few pages, and he and his dog play happily in a British countryside. After finding the titular stick, he demonstrates all the fun a child can have with this simple item. He uses it as a walking stick, an instrument, a toy for his dog, a drawing and stirring tool, and much more.

While he plays, he leads the reader through a quiet countryside with green fields, blue water, pale sand, and finally meets up with a black girl; together, they combine their sticks to build a playhouse.

Verdict: While some anxious parents may fret over the lack of adults as the child explores a stream, mud, and fields, this gentle story explores the joys of outdoor play and solitary playtime. A fun addition to storytime with many possible activity extensions.

Daisy Doodles by Michelle Robinson, and Irene Dickson is an illustrated book for kids, which combines a clever mixture of fun drawings and actual photographs to provide a real sense of creating a new, magical world in which Daisy slips into to become a drawing version of herself.

Yes, magical things happen when Daisy Doodles!

On a rainy day with nothing to do, Daisy doodled a mouse, Pipsqueak, who sneezed itself right off the page and into Daisy's life. From there Daisy gets busy doodling and cutting out a magical land and suddenly her room disappears a
nd adventures with Pipsqueak begin!

I wanted to review this book because I love rodents, (fancy rats in particular), and if you ask me this so-called mouse, is actually a bare-tailed rat! And as a fancy rat owner, this makes Daisy Doodles an even greater treat for me.

This is a fun, cute story which should appeal to children who love to use their imagination to draw and make things. If they don't already, this should encourage them to do so!

Daisy is just like any normal little girl bored on a rainy day, and Pipsqueak, well, he's an endearing character of whom Daisy brings to life through her drawings. A magical blend of colourful photos and beautiful illustrations, make this a super creative, kids picture book for all to enjoy!
