Alecia is entering high school which starts in 8th grade in her Canadian city. She has many changes going on and is not excited about all of them. Connor, one of her best friends doesn’t help when he tells her, “...there’s nothing to it. You go, get knocked around by a few grade 10s, have your lunch snagged by some grade 11, and go home. Then you spend three hours doing homework you don’t understand, and have nightmares all night and start over the next morning. Piece of cake.” Not only is she dealing with a new school, but also she has had a new stepfather for only two months and now he will be coaching her soccer team, a team she insists she is only on because her other best friend Anne talked her into joining several years ago. She and Anne don’t have any classes together and Anne is forced to quit the team when her father is upset with her grades. Anne has started going to church which doesn’t set well with Alecia, and has begun a friendship with a girl who Alecia can’t stand. Furthermore, her stepfather won’t let her quit the team even though Anne did even when she insists Anne was the only reason she was on the team. Connor, who is in grade 9, starts a relationship with one of Alecia’s teammates and she cannot understand why her friends no longer have anything to do with her. Her mother points out that she wouldn’t have to change friends if she would learn to understand that friends change. She realizes in the end that she can salvage her friendships with both Connor and Anne if she accept the changes that have happened in their lives along with the changes that have happened in hers. She also realizes she actually likes soccer and can play well if she puts her mind to it.
