I have always thought that to assume Ireland was isolated and independent of everything before Christianity was a misnomer, but this author has some very romano-centric glasses on and everything he sees reflects that bias. He also has never seen a knitter around knitted garments, they behave as I expect most craftsmen do when faced with something that attracts them, they stare and stare at it until they understand it, until they can work out how they could use it, and sometimes it's a completely different take that they have on it (see: Japanese knitting, Aran Knitting) and some of his proof falls into this category, influences; most of the rest fall under trade, both trade missions and trading. These things aren't indicative of invasion, they're suggestive of a society that traded, often very successfully, or raided, my vote would veer to trading, because raiding would have invited invasion.

Ireland has some resources that were wanted by other countries and by other peoples and it wanted goods from these people too, and yes, sometimes we underestimate how much trade was between Ireland and the world, in many ways the 20th century was more isolated than many others.

It's interesting but I think he looks at the world too much through roman-centric glasses and fails to see that there could be more than one way to arrive at a style or design.

He does make a very good case for overall strong Roman influence in Ireland including a punitive raid in the 4th Century. It appears that the prevailing view among Irish scholars has been that Ireland was somehow "untouched", by the Romans. This is obviously silly as Ireland is only 40 miles from Britain at its closest. It appears that the Romans and their British subjects had extensive trading relationships with the Irish right from the beginning of the Roman occupation of Britain.… (mehr)
