Neagu Djuvara (1916–2018)

My knowledge of Romanian history prior to reading A Brief Illustrated History of Romanians was sketchy at best; Vlad the Impaler, Queen Marie, picking the wrong side in World War II and a couple of dictators. As evidenced by the "brief" in the title, this is by no means an exhaustive history and the author, the patriotic Romanian he was, is quick to nail his colour to the mast, so do not expect a fair and balanced look at the history of his people (he defends Vlad Tepes impaling habit as really no worse than many other rulers of the same time).

What I did learn was that surely there can be few peoples that have suffered as much as Romanians and still keep on ticking.… (mehr)

Unele povestiri, cum ar fi accidentul aviatic al soției sale, fac acest interviu foarte captivant. De fapt, cartea se citește extrem de ușor, dovadă c-am citit-o în trei zile - e scurtă și are multe poze.

Mi-a s-a părut foarte credibil, deși s-ar putea să fie ceva subiectiv, pentru că rezonez diferit la poveștile despre copilărie și școală în locurile foarte familiare mie. „Prima limbă pe care am învățat-o a fost franceza” și „am mers pe jos în Basarabia 750 de kilometri în total”, sunt numai două dintre amănuntele care mă fac să-l admir.

Neagu Djuvara inspiră multă sinceritate și modestie, deși a trecut prin atât de multe. Evenimentele astea dure și numeroase l-au făcut foarte uman și umil. Adică e un interviu despre om, nu despre doctorul în Drept și Istorie, deci trebuie privit ca atare - limbajul este frumos, dar relaxat, lucrurile povestite sunt destul de intime: despre mamă, despre bunici și unchi, despre sentimente și speranțe, despre cei 23 de ani în Africa, multe amănunte istorice ș.a.m.d Toate astea, spuse simplu și cu emoție, apropie. Așa că am să citesc și amintirile din pribegie, deși tocmai mi s-a recomandat să nu.

Romanian historian, Neaga Djuvara, wrote “A Brief Illustrated History of Romanians” (2014), which was published when he was 98 years old – so Mr Djuvara speaks from experience, having fought in WW II, and lived through the communist years. The book is very accessible, and the illustrations add to the appreciation. Yet, reading his book I cannot get away from the impression that it is a rather rosy, uncritical view of Romanian history. Vlad Tepes was perhaps cruel, but so were other European rulers, at the time. Carol II may have robbed the country of its gold, but he wasn’t too bad, after all. And don’t forget all the injustice done to the Romanian people by everybody else. Tiring, after a while.… (mehr)
