Julia V. Douthwaite

The author is a Notre Dame professor of 18 c. French literature whom I met while trying to learn more about the Candide sequel. She mentioned that Circassian women are mentioned in her book. (I had recalled that Candide's favorite odalique in one chapter of the "sequel" was Circassian, but on checking I found that it was just a woman named something like "Zirza.") I'm sure she was right about what was in her own book, but for whatever it may say about the comprehensiveness of the index, Circassians aren't listed in the index.… (mehr)
