Rezensionen

This book is the fourth in a series, but the first I have read. I didn't feel I'd missed out by not having the back story: enough was revealed as the narrative continued. The story is set in the tumultuous, frightening, sickeningly nasty last days of WWII in Berlin, and revolves round the various members of a fairly disjointed family. As a depiction of a tense, deprived, difficult and dangerous period it's excellent. As an involving story of the personalities involved, it's far less so. It was a worthwhile history lesson for me, but I shan't read the other books in the series.… (mehr)

The Dark Clouds Shining is a difficult story. Perhaps the difficulty are the hardships that the characters embrace for the Russian Revolution, famine, death, and lots of cold blooded murders. Only three and one half stars were given in this review more probably for the history than for the actual story. It was researched and definitely better written than the other Jack McColl books.

Jack of Spies is a story of love, and war. One auto salesman who was recruited to be a spy for England. Jack tried to live two different lives unsuccessfully keeping his family and girlfriend clueless as to his espionage job. It was a good story but not special. Therefore 3 1/2 stars were given to this book.

The book is set mostly in Berlin as Hitler begins his plans to declare war. John, a British journalist with a German son, wants to remain in Germany, even though he sees what's coming. He blunders his way into a world of spies as he tries to help friends.
