Can you call a monster-fighting graphic novel with massive bedbugs and giant rats "cute"? This one's squarely in the tween category, I'd say; it could have gone grittier to appeal to the teens/YA, or it could have gone goofier for younger kids, but it's pretty good for that fine line! I only wish I could have gotten a bit more wrap-up at the end, and that I could have seen a little more clearly what happened to each of the kinds of monsters; it went by really quickly at that point.

After his mother's death and his family's move to New York City, Dwayne becomes friends with a handful of kids who notice a pattern of odd events in Brooklyn ... one that the authorities refuse to recognize no matter how dangerous it is getting.

When I read a review of this book, I was very excited for what sounded like an interesting read. While the premise (old urban legends coming to life) was indeed appealing, it just didn't quite pan out. The book was more concerned with getting to the fight scenes and having a few laughs than exploring anything in depth; as a result, the legends weren't well explained, nor were the complex relationships introduced really examined completely. However, given that the intended audience for this book is much younger than I am (probably aimed for middle-grade students rather than adults), I can imagine those readers would enjoy the exact amount of depth provided here. The story was indeed tightly woven, although there was just enough left open at the end for a follow-up title.

The illustrations are fine -- not exactly my preferred style but they mostly worked for this title. Occasionally, especially in high-action scenes, I felt like the pictures were a little difficult to follow due to their somewhat sketchy style. The creators definitely tried to get a diverse set of characters, which is great. However, of the main characters, only one is female ... and her three closest (male) friends are all romantically interested in her. Sigh.

Backmatter includes some facts about Brooklyn and a brief insider look at the art process.
