Rezensionen

A surprisingly solid, if mostly predictable, story, with many gorgeous visuals and beautiful sets in spite of (or even because of) the dated nature of the visual effects. A few minor plot holes irked me a bit, the pacing could use a touch improvement and the protagonist is perhaps a touch too stonefaced for my liking, but these are quibbles -- this was otherwise good fun. And who doesn't want to see Jeremy Irons in full make-up as an underground liche-like creature?

A Victorian inventor travels to the distant future.

I didn't expect much, and I didn't get much. The book is not particularly suited to being a movie, and despite all of their changes to the story, they didn't do a single thing to address that problem. And the few things that the movie should have been able to have in its favor - adventure, suspense, and a sense of wonder - are absent.

A submarine is shrunk and sent inside someone.

I'm quite surprised that this wasn't crap. Even though it's often silly and has a fair amount of bad science, it reminds me a lot of A Space Odyssey. It has that slow, deliberate pacing (especially during the shrinking sequence), and usually seems more interested with science fiction ideas and visual spectacle than with plot and characters.

First rate adaption of H.G. Wells classic story, well acted and absorbing. Special effects are of the time but convincing nonetheless.
