LSTs, Landing Ship Tanks often cited as Large Slow Targets were the workhorses of amphibious landing in WW2. With small crews, minimal armament, and very underpowered; they hauled men, vehicles, and materials ashore in both the Atlantic and Pacific campaigns. This quite readable novel tells about one that was at Sicily, Anzio, and Normandy.

WW2 has started and Commander Smith has his ship, the aging light cruiser Cassandra. He engages in early action with the newer, larger faster and better armed German ship, the Brandenburg which is not conclusive. Assigned to the task of capturing the Altmark and freeing its prisoners is his next challenge which takes him into Norwegian waters and more action with the Brandenburg. Lots of fighting ashore and aboard which leads him to his final conclusive battle with the German cruiser. A good story that effectively moves Commander Smith into the war that followed the "War to End all Wars".… (mehr)

Lots of moving parts as the historical pieces of Smith's life surface, evolve and become part of the current scene that will become history. Lots of action in various theaters of war, and even some in neutral territory. Many good characters most of which seem to be related seem to be related to Corcoran Smith.

A few skeins of history and a lively storyline drive this book and series very nicely. On detached duty wth the Italian Navy, Commander Smith leads a small detachment of MTBs against the Austrian Navy led by a German battlecruiser. Some time ashore supporting an Italian, retreat, then he takes on the German ship with some very unique weapons.
