David Faber (1) (1926–2015)

David Faber was born to a Jewish family in Nowy Sa̜cz, Poland. At age 14, after his homeland was invaded by Germany, he witnessed the murder of his family and survived eight Nazi concentration camps. He survived to be liberated from Bergen-Belsen in 1945 at the age of 18, weighing only 72 pounds. After the war, he moved to England to live with his sister Rachel, the only other survivor of his immediate family, and trained as a pastry chef in London. He worked at the House of Commons, among other places, and married his first wife, Tonia, with whom he had a son. In the 1950s, he moved to the USA, working as a pastry chef in Springfield, Massachusetts and later moving to San Diego, California. He was called upon to offer testimony against Nazi war criminals. His memoir, Because of Romek, published in 1997, was dedicated to the memory of his older brother, who was tortured and killed by the Germans before his eyes. He lectured on the Holocaust at schools, colleges, universities, and religious institutions in the San Diego area and throughout the USA.
