Writing in 1945, Fairlie is concerned that "Nothing is given away" (chapter XV1) when Drummond is inserted into enemy-occupied France with his American colleague Mat Harlow. Soon they are not only facing the Germans but also Drummond's old foe, Irma Peterson. Although pushing credibility at some points eg when Drummond manages to escape from the Gestapo, this is still a jolly good yarn.

A good effort by Fairlie following on from Sapper. Set in post 1945, Drummond is enjoying some innocent sport shooting and returns home with his old chums Darrell and Longworth to be confronted by a furious Phyllis. We later learn that her anger has been aroused by an advert in the personal column of "The Times", an advert remarkably similar to the one which brought them together some years previously. Meanwhile a mysterious Mrs Smith has moved into the long-empty Manor House and soon there is a lady in distress needing Drummond's assistance.
The plot is not brilliant but the dialogue is handled well by Fairlie who also adds humour to his writing.
A good easy read.
