Familial love, tension, friendship and interconnections are all part of Laurence Fearnley's novel WINTER TIME, set in New Zealand's MacKenzie Basin, a location which absolutely stars in this story. A place in which breath frosts, mists are all encompassing, peaks are starkly white, snow slopes glow silver-blue, and the lakes are black and dark.

(8.5)This almost reached the heights of her earlier novel 'The Hut Builder' for me. The setting of the fictional Lake Matariki, (actually Lake Tekapo), is beautifully rendered along with the searingly cold climate, characters in their own right. There is a steady build in tension and the eventual climax and ending sadly failed to reach my expectation. After confronting his own personal situation, I felt there was no resolution. Nonetheless, I did really enjoy this return to her earlier form.

Loretta is compiling ‘The Dangerous Book for Menopausal Women’, Chance is tied up in knots by a very controlling mother, and Riva is still mourning the loss of her sister while she works hard to establish a wetlands sanctuary. Four years ago, Riva and her sister built a den in a clearing, and all three characters develop a connection with the haven. Although the characters did come together and find strength from each other in the end, the book felt like it was missing a key event, a resolution, a powerful action, whether related to the wetland or Chance’s mother. Instead the story just petered out which was disappointing. Good writing, a lovely cover and beautiful botanical illustrations by Audrey Eagle.… (mehr)

I always hope that this author will again achieve the standard she set with The Hut Builder. However, again I was disappointed. I enjoyed the characters of Chance and Riva. I found them identifiable but struggled to relate to the character of Loretta. I found her depiction inconsistent. An okay, read but not memorable.
