It conveys the Italian experience of WW2 on its own land as more one of a kind of civil war that divides into many parts...
The humanity of the aggression, the humanity of the resistance and their own violence, the red resistance versus the white and all the foreign interests that play, make the “novel” more than a warning.

I personally woke to understand how the human animal is just there beneath the surface to make the most absurd and violent of decisions, as well as love and kindness.

Hoe kort ook, dit was een lastige. Niet alleen omdat ik het in het originele Italiaans las (en Fenoglio toch wel een woordenschat gebruikt waar ik niet zo vertrouwd mee ben), maar vooral door de afstandelijke toon en de bijzonder neerslachtige inhoud. Je kan het zien als een sociaal document dat het armtierige boerenleven in de Noord-Italiaanse Langhe-streek schetst, voor de tweede wereldoorlog (de tijdsperiode is eigenlijk helemaal niet duidelijk). Het begint meteen met een sterfgeval, en de daaropvolgende monoloog van de jonge Agostino is allesbehalve opwekkend te noemen. Het deed allemaal erg aan de naturalistische boerenromans van begin 20ste eeuw denken, met dit verschil dat Fenoglio dit schreef in 1954. Ik weet het niet, het sprak me niet erg aan; ik hou niet van overdadige emotie, maar deze ingehouden afstandelijkheid lag me niet.… (mehr)
