Rezensionen

Struik Field Guides are generally excellent, and this is no exception, combining succinct information with distribution maps and colour photographs for over 700 species of southern African succulents.

Drought, global warming, and a generally more environmentally aware approach to gardening has made many turn from high maintenance exotic flowers and shrubs to indigenous, water-wise plants for the garden.

There is more to succulents than just aloes, stem cacti, and Ice Plant ground cover – everyone from the Eastern Cape knows the gaudy Dune Fig, used to relieve the bite of Blue Bottle Stings - and this family has some surprisingly exotic relations.

For a sophisticated and glamorous succulent garden, the Eurocentric horticulturalist may choose from members of the Daisy and Begonia Families, or the Carnation Family: the Arum Lily Family, the Jacaranda Family, the Geranium, Hyacinth, Orchid, and Mint Families.

A caveat: for the beginner, this is not an easy book to navigate; as advertised on the back cover, there is a section on the uses of succulents, a conservation alert, and on gardening with succulents – if you call a page ‘a section’.

Novice or veteran botanist, the Field Guide to Succulents is worth reading from cover to cover – maybe not all in one go though – to give a guide to the key features and environment of this rich and diverse plant form. 47% of the world’s succulents occur in Southern Africa: reason enough to read it.
