Drought, global warming, and a generally more environmentally aware approach to gardening has made many turn from high maintenance exotic flowers and shrubs to indigenous, water-wise plants for the garden.
There is more to succulents than just aloes, stem cacti, and Ice Plant ground cover – everyone from the Eastern Cape knows the gaudy Dune Fig, used to relieve the bite of Blue Bottle Stings - and this family has some surprisingly exotic relations.
For a sophisticated and glamorous succulent garden, the Eurocentric horticulturalist may choose from members of the Daisy and Begonia Families, or the Carnation Family: the Arum Lily Family, the Jacaranda Family, the Geranium, Hyacinth, Orchid, and Mint Families.
A caveat: for the beginner, this is not an easy book to navigate; as advertised on the back cover, there is a section on the uses of succulents, a conservation alert, and on gardening with succulents – if you call a page ‘a section’.
Novice or veteran botanist, the Field Guide to Succulents is worth reading from cover to cover – maybe not all in one go though – to give a guide to the key features and environment of this rich and diverse plant form. 47% of the world’s succulents occur in Southern Africa: reason enough to read it.… (mehr)
