This little book actually reads much bigger than it is. The type font is relatively small and there are no photos or illustrations.

The author explains in the preface that the book is essentially the thesis he wrote as partial fulfillment for the requirements for the Bachelor of Divinity degree that he was granted in 1949 from the Butler School of Religion. His purpose was to document “...a history of the statements of the Plea of the churches of Christ for Christian unity upon the basis of a Restoration of the church of the New Testament,” by American “Restoration Movement” religious leaders, pretty much chronologically through the years (1793-1949).

The chapters of the book are:

1. Restoration Beginnings, 1793-1804
2. The Period of the Last Will and Testament and the Declaration and Address, 1804-1823
3. The Period of the Restoration of the Ancient Order of Things, 1823-1837
4. The Period of Questions, 1837-1990
5. The Period of Digression from the Plea, 1900-1948
6. The Original Ground of the Plea

The author quotes 142 religious leaders one or more times, and Alexander Campbell being quoted the most, with thirteen quotations. Of particular interest to me, the author includes a quote from M. P. Hayden (my connection to Hayden because of my college experience) and from Edgar Dewitt Jones (my connection to Jones because of my current church membership).

After receiving his BD degree from Butler, the author spent many years teaching “Restoration History” in colleges associated with the nondenominational Christian Church/Church of Christ stream of the Stone-Campbell religious tradition.

I believe that the author does an excellent job describing his position of “the Plea,” and thus, it is an excellent source for persons interested in learning more of the Stone-Campbell religious heritage, particularly from the perspective of the religious stream mentioned above.

The book (thesis) is well documented and includes a fine bibliography. Readers need to bear in mind that it was written 60 plus years ago. Although the book is out of print, it is available for purchase on the used book market.

This book, adapted from a doctoral thesis, is full of quotes from documents and various leaders and publications of the Restoration Movement. It gives the history of a concept, rather than of persons, in the movement. The details of the later divisions in the movement, based on statements of various leaders is helpful.
