Rezensionen

This volume is part of the Historic Building Conservation series targeted at construction professionals and interested individuals involved in repair and refurbishment of historical buildings.

From the preface:
...provides within a single volume essential information on the properties of the principal traditional external building materials. Subjects covered include their availability and sourcing, the causes of erosion and decay, the skills required for their application on conservation projects and the impact the materials have on the environment.

Chapters are contributed by subject matter experts from across the field. The text is concise, intended to impart the fundamentals of the topic, and give the reader the knowledge necessary for informed discussion with other professionals.

As a lay reader with passing interest in the topic, I found the contents accessible and useful. Restoration and preservation efforts for notable historic buildings made more sense when taking a look back. The volumes in this series are not for everyone, but are invaluable to those with a desire to learn more, whether lay or professional.

First, what this is not: It is not a general tourist guide to Bath. You will need to look elsewhere if you want an account of all the various tourist attractions in the city, of which there are many.

Second, what it is: This book is part of the updating of the Pevsner Architectural Guides to Britain series being undertaken as a result of Yale University Press's acquisition of the rights to the series. The original series had only a chapter devoted to Bath.
