This is a wonderful book. The author is a professor from South Carolina. He went out to interview Paige in the early 1950's. He went to Kansas City and hung out with Paige, talking and drinking and talking.... The author inserts himself into the story in an interesting way & I was very curious about him.

OK, but...is it wonderful? Is it exploitative? Does it paint Paige as a story-telling (lying) hustler? The voice seems real to me but what do I know?

I picked up Southern Fried Plus 6 based on an article in a Columbia, SC publication called The Free Times. The author described it as one of the funniest novels he had ever read, and I became even more curious when it was mention that Fox was based in Columbia, where I lived at the time.

The novel is more a set of short stories, with almost all of them taking place in the South or with Southern characters. Though described as a humorist, Fox's sense of humor may be more refined than my tastes. A few parts made me chuckle, but overall the collection of stories aren't what I catagorize as humor. Instead, I believe Fox is brilliant at capturing a sense of attitude that is uniquely Southern. I wish I could do it more justice, but the picture I have in my mind is of Fox as a man telling tales on a front porch is a small town, deep into South Carolina.

Overall, I recommend this collection to anyone who has an interest in Southern culture, especially centered on Southern storytelling. It should be noted, this collection was written in the 1960's and there is very little that is politically correct about it. Still, it's a shame more people haven't read Fox's work. He's definitely worth checking out.
