This is a very interesting book. Franklin assesses Mannix as a complex character and one not helped by previous biographies some of which have been too laudatory or too critical and tries to steer a middle course. This I feel he has achieved with considerable merit. Mannix's influence in Australian church-state relations, in politics with the Labour Party, his opposition to conscription during WWI and his support for Sinn Féin in Ireland at the same time are all assessed together with a myriad of other issues. I learned a lot about this complex figure from reading this book. Overall I feel the conclusion is fair.… (mehr)
