Wouldn't we all love to go back in time, maybe yes, maybe no! This is what happens to Lizzie in Through The Brown Mountain Lights by C.C. Tillery. Lizzie goes back in time to 1859, 110 years earlier than her present time, by going through the light as she and her boyfriend, Ben, are camping on Brown Mountain in North Carolina.
Having heard about the lights in North Carolina folklore, I looked forward to reading this book and I'm so glad I did. Well worth my time spent reading. I learned so much about the smallpox epidemic, about mountain herbs, the underground railroad, slave trade, and mountain healers. So looking forward to reading more books by C.C. Tillery.… (mehr)

A novel about the lives of a young couple living in the mountains of North Carolina at the turn of the century. Vivid descriptions and Cherokee myths add to a well told story.

I really enjoyed this book! The-end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it is always fascinating to me but quite often books and stories in this genre don’t give you enough details to satisfy me. This one did. You really understand what the people in this book are doing to survive.

The heroine is very likeable and you care what happens to her. The other characters are drawn very well and they seem very realistic. We’ve known people like these. I will be ready to read more from this author!

Bess is the oldest sibling in a rural Appalachian family in North Carolina at the turn of the 20th century. Not one for following the rules, Bess becomes a stong and independent woman through family tragedies and the teachings of her Cherokee great-grandmother. This is the first book in a promising Appalachian series.
