- François Furet was a French historian whose speciality was the French Revolution. Initially a Marxist, he became disillusioned with this philosophy and left the Communist Party in 1956. He went on to challenge the Marxist interpretation of the French Revolution as a form of class struggle. He described the Revolution as an inherently totalitarian regime.

La Revolución no es un tema de la Historia como otros pues constituye un patrimonio político y moral, más que una curiosidad intelectual. A tal punto que, si reconocemos que hay tantas historias de una revolución como familias políticas obligadas a definirse con respecto a ella, todas estas historias ofrecen a través de sus opiniones opuestas una obsesión común: el aniversario de un punto cero. En consecuencia, la línea divisoria en la historiografía de la Revolución no es, en términos intelectuales, aquella que separa políticamente, sino la que enfrenta a la historia conmemorativa con la historia conceptual: Michelet y Tocqueville en nuestro caso.… (mehr)
