This book is a compilation taken from Phil's VeloNews column, written over a number of years. It's presented in question an answer format with a loose chronological progression through his career. The first half of the book more or less overlaps in time with his first book, [b:Pro Cycling on $10 a Day: From Fat Kid to Euro Pro|22306105|Pro Cycling on $10 a Day From Fat Kid to Euro Pro|Phil Gaimon|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1400881640s/22306105.jpg|41696462], while the second half moves beyond this to his time in Europe.
Phil's readers ask questions about all aspects of cycling and his answers are often funny and sarcastic, but at the same time informative. As a cyclist, I appreciated the humor; we've all come across "The Creep" at one point or another. I even learned a few things, discovering the wonderful world of embrocation, but I have a good excuse for not knowing what that was, since I'm from LA!
I think I actually enjoyed this book more than his first one, and am looking forward to reading his third, [b:Draft Animals|34785403|Draft Animals|Phil Gaimon|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1498853070s/34785403.jpg|55984233].… (mehr)
Pro Cycling on $10 a day covers Gaimon’s progression from fat guy on a couch to pro cyclist. The writing style is humorous and often sarcastic, which makes it an extremely enjoyable read. If you’re like me and love cycling as a sport, whether you are a weekend group rider or have dabbled in the amateur racing scene, you will like this book, and may even learn something useful. I particularly enjoyed his descriptions of team tactics and how a skinny guy should race a crit!
This book is a breath of fresh air for a sport that has struggled with its image over the past 10 years, written by a guy who found the sport late and made it to the pro ranks by hard work and sacrifice. Having met and ridden with Gaimon at some local events in the LA area, I have to say this guy is the real deal and a great ambassador for the sport.… (mehr)
Lots of fun liked this way more than his book on $10 a day. This one had way more info on the pro cyclists and Phil really seemed to state his true feelings on how he felt about people he rode with. Good insight on what it is like to be on the tour.
If you've ever watched even a little of the Tour de France, cycling in the olympics, or just wondered about pro racers, then read this book.
Gaimon is an average (I would argue above average but I'm no expert) cyclist who gets a chance to race in the European circuit. He has an engaging and humorous style. He rocks his use of footnotes.
Worth purchasing if you have a passing interest in the subject matter.
