Freedom of the Monsoon by Malika Gandi

This is the story of young Pooja, her family and close friends. Set in the early 1940's when India was trying to break from British rule. We follow five people, Pooja, Dev, his brother Rakesh, Amit and Sunil. Their struggles, triumphs and tragedies are told with vivid details.

Love, sacrifice, tragedy, friendship and family bonding are the premise of this story. Well written and heartfelt, Pooja was very likable and brave for a woman of her time. I strongly suggest to readers who love dramatic stories filled with emotions. A fantastic read… (mehr)

Freedom of the Monsoon is reflective of the Indian culture, and when the author uses Indian phrases, she adds the English translation so that it is easy for any reader to understand. Dev and Pooja are two characters in love but tragedy and sacrifices for their family and their culture, they find themselves apart, pledging to be with each other once again. It is a remarkable story and very poignant. Emotions run very high and it is a very touching story. Anyone who loves a good tragic love-story, and books about Indian culture, will surely love this book! The ending is not something that anyone sees coming. I hope when you read this, you have a box of tissues handy. This is the second one of Gandhi's that I read, and I will continue to read her work. She gave me a new interest and appreciation into Indian culture and its people.… (mehr)

It is intriguing and Gandhi pulls the reader into the story right from the beginning. The story brings the reader on an adventurous and captivating journey. The characters are remarkable and believable, as two characters are from two different time periods. It is an interesting look into Indian culture and history. It is a very interesting story and though there are some differences between cultures (me, being American) it is an easy to follow story and makes the subject of reincarnation seem possible and believable. A fully inspirational story. I did like how she put the English version of an Indian word or phrase in parenthesis, so the reader knew what she meant. She caters to both Indian and English Speaking readers. I can't wait to read more of her work.… (mehr)
