1896 London and Donato del Nero arrives with his Stradivarius to give a concert. Unfortunately it is stolen and Holmes and Watson are brought in to investigate.
Too much about the violin, and not enough of the mystery though that is quite a straightforward one.

This was supposed to be a reread for me so I can say that I've gone through all the ebooks that are currently in my Kindle, so I didn't feel too bad about not finishing it. Whew, okay, I've had my fair share of cheap-ass Sherlock Holmes ebooks because I'm a) broke af and b) cheap af, but cheap is sometimes, well, cheap. There were three stories in this one (maybe those are the poisoned pawns?):

Sherlock Holmes and the Mystery of Hamlet by Emanuel E. Garcia
This is the one that I had the most difficulty with. I skipped most of it. It was SO dense that I almost couldn't get through it. In a nutshell, Holmes has retired to Sussex and is now living the rest of his life in quiet (for him) obscurity. This story takes place some time in the early 1930s, as evidenced by the the author's references to Hitler coming to power (Hitler joined the Nazi Party sometime in 1920 and became its leader by 1921. I know this because I googled it trying to figure out how old the author was implying the boys were.) and then later when Watson directly quotes Holmes' age as being "in his eighties." Normally I wouldn't take issue with this, but considering that the author also has an eighty-something Holmes coupling with the vicar's comely young wife, I think it ruins my suspension of disbelief. (Not only would his age make the relationship, uh, interesting, I've read the original stories and a great number of pastiches and I don't think that's within Holmes' character.

The story is all about how Holmes has turned his considerable talents on the problem of who authored Shakespeare's plays. Now, it might just be because I don't particularly care of Shakespeare, but this was DRY AS DUST. As I was getting to the part where Holmes started explaining his logic, I remember that I disliked this one the first time around and skipped the rest of it. The author, however, captures Conan Doyle's style very well so I bumped it up half a star to two. - 2/5 ⭐

Sherlock Holmes and the Belgravian Letter by Roger Jaynes
This one was better. Jaynes also captured Conan Doyle's style very well, but the mystery lacked, well, mystery. I solve it. I, who never solve anything in advance, solved this mystery like half-way through the first chapter. Now, this might be because I had already read it, but Lestrade also didn't see through the fake murder ruse that the murdered man's wife perpetuated in order to cover up his suicide. And, granted, he isn't very smart but it was just... So Obvious. I got to the part where my theories were confirmed and skipped the rest. But at least this one was readable. - 2.5/5 ⭐

Sherlock Holmes and the Highcliffe Invitation by Eddie Maguire
I got literally one chapter into this one, remembered what it was about and skipped it. Not that the Kaiser isn't interesting I just, can't bring myself to care about him. And, if memory serves, this is actually a fake Wilhelm. The writing was, again, very much in the correct style and I'm not going to penalize Maguire for writing a subject that I, personally, am not very much into so: 3/5 ⭐

I'm rounding the book up to three stars because the technical skill of the authors almost saved it at some points so, overall, 3/5 ⭐

Disappointing. Not faithful to the characters.

Disappointing. Not faithful to the characters. The third story was the closest. The first was just an opportunity for discredited speculation on who wrote Shakespeare's play.
