This was another title I was given to read for Children's Book Day. I seriously doubt I'd have picked it up otherwise, but I'm glad I read it - it was really enjoyable.
I can see it being a made-for-TV movie.
The characters are easy to identify with. Even though some of them start off fairly stereotypical, they develop during the course of the story.

This is not a difficult read, yet it's packed with a cast of fully fleshed out characters and touches on a number of important subjects. Leading character Joe is a likeable boy with a taste for fast food. His Italian background, through his mother comes to the forefront when the family business reaches crisis. I applaud the author for promoting healthy eating and opera in a fun way - unusual! Particularly sensitive treatment of how immigrants are treated within communities. Recommended for 9 .… (mehr)
