- Born in France to an international family (1 part French, 2 parts Spanish, 1 part Strange), Gary Ghislain grew up between Paris and the French Riviera. After obtaining a master's degree in literature and linguistics at the University of Paris 8, he packed his passport, a few reasonably clean T-shirts and his beloved Converse shoes, and headed out to travel the world, work odd jobs and write young adult novels. A Bad Night for Bullies (The Goolz Next Door) von Gary Ghislain

Teen fiction. This was like one of those goofy teen guy movies with lots of girls running around with very little clothes on, and guys making fools of themselves while trying to impress them--if you're into those movies, this is the book for you! But if you're not so much, then no, I wouldn't recommend this (and especially not if you're going to be offended about the boys killing frogs for fun). I'm one of those people that has to sit through the whole movie (even if it's not very good) to find out what happens--fortunately, with books, you can just skip to the end. This wasn't bad; I just had better things to read.… (mehr)
On the whole, I thought this would better as a graphic novel. An amusing, fast read about a fourteen year old boy on the run with a beautiful escaped psychiatric patient who thinks she is an alien and must find Johnny Depp to complete her mission. Pushes suspension of disbelief past the breaking point - all flash and hormones and very little substance. I predict teen readers will love it and it will be made into a movie.
How I Stole Johnny Depp's Alien Girlfriend by Gary Ghislain would make a good double header with Stuck on Earth by David Klass. Both take troubled teenagers who have stories about being aliens. Rather than making their claims a metaphor for deeper feelings of not fitting, the plot plays out straight up.
David Gershwin's father is a psychologist. His current patient is a trouble teenager, Zelda, who claims to be a warrior from space, genetically programmed to procreate with a single human male — Johnny Depp. Yep — Johnny Depp. There are a couple problems — she's in France and he could be anywhere in the world, depending on his filming schedule.
David ends up on the run with Zelda, for a madcap adventure through France. It's as wacky an adventure as The Fifth Element but for tween readers. It's a short, fun read. I enjoyed every single page. It was one of the rare books that I was actually sad to see end.… (mehr)
