St. Gildas (c. 500–570), also known as "Gildas the Wise", or Gildas Sapiens, was a 6th-century British monk, best known for his scathing religious polemic De Excidio et Conquestu Britanniae, which recounts the history of the Britons before and during the coming of the Saxons.

I've rated this 5 stars as this is an absolutely crucial text for Post-Romano British history if only because we have so little written records for that period. However, in saying that, Gildas is an unreliable authority and should be treated accordingly. The fact he nowhere mentions Arthur in what is, it has to be admitted, an old man's rant is not proof he (or whoever we associate with Arthur) did not exist; although it has been used extensively as such. Treat Gildas as one piece in the Arthurian puzzle, that because of our lack of contemporary accounts, has given him more weight than he deserves.… (mehr)
