(mehr)

Gunday pulls no punches in his depiction of the violence and brutishness of those involved in people smuggling. The interesting aspect of this book however is the psychological study of Gaza, a young man who has grown up within the system and has suffered severe trauma as a result. Instructive as it is, I am not convinced that Gunday is all that successful in his portrayal although it remains deeply moving.
I have the feeling that Gunday's writing is somewhat allegorical, but the allegories are constantly moving in and out of focus. At times this is quite exilerating but it eventually becomes disconcerting, never quite sure if I should be on the look out for these references or not. 12 May 2019… (mehr)

I wasn't over impressed by this as I read through the first quarter or so, it seemed too gratuitously violent. But I'm glad I stuck with it because gradually there emerged a much more finely nuanced novel. And ultimately, of course, of redemption. I can't help it, I love redemption. February 2019.
