Book 2, it helps to read book 1 to gain better insight into the characters. But, the story works as a standalone. Becca is handed a ring by a man who is killed right in front of her. For the second time, she is on the run. However, on this occasion, Becca has the training and access to resources. What she doesn't have is preparation for who it is that is after the ring. The story is immersive and descriptive, following Becca's perspective throughout.

I gave it a try - well, four chapters of it anyway - and found it to be completely unengaging. The premise is certainly an interesting one, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired.
