- George Goodwin is a history graduate of Pembroke College, Cambridge, where he was awarded a Foundation Exhibition.
He is Honorary Writer in Residence at Benjamin Franklin House in London, and a Fellow of both the Chartered Institute of Marketing and of the Royal Society of Arts (and a Member of the William Shipley Group for RSA History).
In 2014 he was an International Fellow at the Robert H. Smith International Center for Jefferson Studies, Monticello.
George lives in Kew, a stone’s throw from the Royal Botanical Gardens.

I renewed this three times and really tried to finish it, but it kept making me fall asleep. I do appreciate the extensive visible endnoting, though, and the double set of illustration plates.
There are times when I really need to be paying closer attention to "impulse" reads, as while this book ostensibly concentrates on the notorious battle, it's really about the slow-motion fall of Henry VI and the House of Lancaster. That said, I'm not so saturated in medieval English history that I didn't get anything out of this work. Goodwin's main virtue is to emphasize how the walking leadership void that was Henry contributed to the ferocity of the "Wars of the Roses," arguing that only an active monarch with a certain degree of military and political skill could have had a chance of controlling the forces undermining the English state. As for the battle itself, Goodwin goes to some lengths to argue that Towton still deserves its notoriety for being the bloodiest day in English intramural combat. I wasn't convinced, but Goodwin does seem like he's providing a reasonable accounting.… (mehr)
Excellent account of the events leading up to the battle at Flodden. Before reading Goodwin's account I was aware that Flodden had been catastrophic for the Scots, and that one of the fallen has a tomb in the ruins of the collegiate chapel at Castle Semple Loch, but with the help of George Goodwin's account I now have a clearer idea of why he died.

If it could have done with anything, a timeline of the events covered and a clear demonstration of who was on the throne in each country at the time, both would have helped me to orient myself in time.
The description of the battle was vivid and illustrated with a couple of battlefield maps. The final chapter seemed to be rather short, especially in contrast with the previous chapters leading up to the battle.
At time the writing was slightly stodgy, which made the battle even more dramatic.… (mehr)
