This short novel tells the story of a group of school friends in Moscow around the time of the coup against Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev in August 1991 and the amazing events in the following months and years leading up to and following the end of the Soviet Union on the last day of that year. These dramatic events, though, are simply the backdrop to their adolescent anxieties about boy/girlfriends, passing their exams and making decisions about their futures, similar to dilemmas faced by millions of other teenagers across the world, albeit with a twist of a formerly totalitarian society at a time of dramatic transition, with their choices initially being comparatively narrow, but now much wider but very uncertain. This adventure starts with a story from their aunt about snowdrops and the story is worn out so the kids must go back and finish it.
They head through the portal behind the fireplace and start the new adventure. Love the part about the snowdrops but also learned a few things.
Love the Northern Lights and have yet to see them for myself, maybe one day. Love how the months of the year come together for one day, so cool.
Such cool adventure stories that are read wihin an hour.
