This is the life story of one world class artist who overcame many difficulties in her life by expressing her talents in brilliantly colorful paintings. She was first confined by the damages of polio, then by being broken in a bus accident, later by illness, and still later by complications of previous injuries. She painted wonderfully and had many things to say about her ability to overcome adversity.
"I am not sick, I am broken. But I am happy to be alive as long as I can paint."
"At the end of the day, we can endure much more than we think we can."
BECOME A WORK OF ART!
"There is nothing more precious than laughter-it is strength to laugh and lose oneself, to be light." Throughout the book there are the illustrations by Natalia Rojas Castro which are delightful, imaginative, clear, and with the brilliant colors the artist herself preferred.
Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to anyone, but especially to a school or teacher or your public library! An excellent book!
I requested and received a free temporary e-book on Adobe Digital Editions from DK/DK Children via NetGalley. Thank you! And thanks to the MET!

This picture book biography is lacking in biography. It starts out interesting, but it takes so long to list various colors it deadens the rest of the story. The artwork is great, and the authors note at the end was way more informative than the pages of the book. I like this book, but it could’ve been done better.

What a BEAUTIFUL book. I love sharing the story of one of the first women to work for Disney. And all of the different names for colors is an excellent learning tool!!

This book is good for later elementary grades, it is a picture book but has a bit more history to it so it may not interest super young students. This book is about Temple Grandin and her journey with creating her hug machine that helps her to calm down and cope a bit when she is having an episode. In a classroom this would be used as a read aloud to give students some history of a real life story of a girl with autism, and be able to understand that topic better.
