Although this book was educational, I found the text to be a little stiff. It was not very engaging, and it was hard to get into. I did appreciate that there were excerpts throughout the books with kosher recipes, instructions on how to make a dreidel, a mention of notable Jewish figures and a timeline that showed the history of Jewish immigration to America. There was a chapter I really enjoyed that explained how certain groups of Jewish immigrants altered their customs when arriving to America, therefore creating different types of branches within the religion. This book is great for students and anyone who knows little about the Mexican War. The book starts out before the war and the leading up to the war and the famous leaders during this time. The pictures were detailed of the leaders and during the war. I liked how this book not only told the story but it also has side notes of famous leaders and places with a small detailed anecdote. The book also states in the beginning that it is being forgotten due to other major wars and many people are forgetting how important the Mexican War was to America. Students can use this book to learn about major leaders, landmarks, states and land.… (mehr)

This book serves as an excellent primer for students who have yet to be introduced to this admittedly oft forgotten war in American History. Indeed, the author acknowledges that this two year war is overshadowed by the American Revolutionary War that came before it and the American Civil War which followed. While mainly focusing upon the events leading up to the war and the war itself, the book also delved into a bit of back story for Mexico, with regards to its bid for independence, and America with its desire to seize Mexican territory for both economic reasons as well as to fulfill their "Manifest Destiny." The book concluded with a brief overview of the events that followed, such as the subsequent California Gold Rush and the cost of the war fro both the United States and Mexico. This survey of events preceding the war and following the war, as well as relating to the war itself.
This would be an excellent book for Middle School and late Elementary School
