Dorothy Cann Hamilton (1949–2016)

Dorothy Cann Hamilton was born in Manhattan, New York on August 25, 1949. She received a bachelor's degree from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in England. She joined the Peace Corps and taught English in Thailand for three years. She worked as a receptionist for her father's trade school mehr anzeigen Apex Technical School to pay off student loans. She became the financial aid director and received a master's degree in business administration from New York University. In 1980, she toured European vocational schools as a board member of the National Association of Trade and Technical Schools and visited a training program for chefs in Paris. In 1984, she founded the French Culinary Institute. She was the host of Chef's Story, a PBS television and Heritage Radio Network series that profiled chefs. She wrote several books including Love What You Do: Building a Career in the Culinary Industry. In 2015, she received the Legion of Honor from the French government for promoting French cuisine in the United States.
