A Narrative of the Uncommon Sufferings and… von Briton Hammon
Briton Hammon was an American Colonial era slave from Massachusetts. He went on a sea voyage for 20 tons of wood found in the Caribbean. The ship he was on wrecked off the coast of Florida where Indians killed all of his ship mates. He escaped only to be imprisoned in Havana for years. He was released and, while in London, ran into his "beloved" master. It's an amazing story of adventure despite being only a few pages long.

Containing an Account of the many Hardships he underwent from the time he left his Master's House, in the year 1747, to the time of his return to Boston.---How he was Cast away in the Capes of Florida;---the horrid Cruelty and inhuman Barbarity of the Indians in Murdering the whole Ship's Crew;---The Manner of his being carry'd by them into Captivity. Also, an Account of his being Confined Four Years and seven months in a close Dungeon,---And the remarkable manner in which he met with his good old Master in London; who returned to New-England, a Passenger, in the Same Ship.

I don't know what is more amazing - that Briton Hammon survived all of these adventures, that a slave in 1760 was able to write as well as he did, that he actually managed to get his story published, or that it survived to be reproduced as part of the Easton Press "Treasures of the Library of Congress" series.… (mehr)
