Historical fiction is, by far, my favorite genre. I strongly disliked learning history growing up but have embraced it as an adult since discovering that I could do so while being entertained through the pages of a fictional tale. That being said, these are not easy novels to write as they require a great deal of research to remain historically accurate and I have a lot of respect for anyone who tackles this. Author Aziz Hamza did an absolutely amazing job with his Roman Empire historical novel, "Eterlimus", and I couldn't get enough of this unique story and setting.

"Eterlimus" tells the story of King Tarquinius' reign in the Roman Empire and the havoc that he and his son wreaked on the people of Rome. A King not elected by the Senate, but one who took power by the sword, Tarquinius and his son, Sextus (apt name), made sure that supporters of the prior king suffered and were just generally terrible rulers. Eterlimus was not only able to escape the brutality himself, but to prosper and seek his revenge as he set up one of the most successful pleasure houses in Rome. He uses his connections and cunning to strike back at the new monarchy and this makes him a hero.

I found this to be an incredibly well written and enjoyable read. I don't read a lot of historical fiction set in this era so it was a refreshing change of pace for me. The bad guys were easy to hate and the good ones had me in their corner pretty quickly. Definitely recommend.
