If you prefer to learn by doing, this is a great resource which keeps you motivated with real products for the time you put into it.

Ruby on Rails Tutorial: Learn Web Development with… von Michael Hartl

One of the best books on rails development out there. Also an excellent primer on test driven development. In the end a completely working web application is created while learning most of the concepts of rails programming.

Ruby on Rails 3 Tutorial: Learn Rails by Example… von Michael Hartl

Great introduction for Ruby on Rails. The author's instructions are meant for Mac users with Textmate, an issue that will cause extra barriers for non-Mac users. Many of the steps are now outdated for current versions of Rails and Ruby and will cause crashes and errors. It's an understandable downside to dead-tree programming books. I recommend you use the book's official blog (http://ruby.railstutorial.org) which contains the most up-to-date guide.

RailsSpace: Building a Social Networking Website… von Michael Hartl

A very good first book on Ruby, Rails and on Web Development in general, for programmers. Leads step by step through the design and coding of a "Web 2.0" style website, and teaches idiomatic Ruby and the Rails framework. The book progresses in perfectly logical steps, with restrained humour and not too much fluff.
