Would have been more enjoyable at about half the length and without trying to be inspirational. IE would have been a really nice long blog post!

Jack Fiskardo is now a captain in the Swedish army, leading a group called the Discoverers. As the army presses into Germany, Jack is still bent on vengeance and suspects that colleague of his superior is not totally trustworthy. His team travel to a village seeking a letter that will prove treachery and witness the destruction of Magdeburg. Jack now seeks revenge on the Prince-Bishop of Prague as well as Carlos Fantom.
It is difficult to actually precise the plot in this novel as there are so many strands that interweave mirroring the complexities of politics in the 17th century. The story romps along at a pace and criss-crosses the continent, introducing new characters and the return of oold ones. The set pieces are visceral but there is a broad streak of humour running through the book which only enhances the sense of time and place. I loved the first book in this series and I streaked through this one because it is brilliant historical fiction!… (mehr)

Jean Fiskardo, soldier, husband and father, is pulled back to complete a task, an assassination that will free France from the yolk of tyranny. However instead of getting paid he is murdered to silence him and his wife is hunted down. His young son, Petit Jacques, is left to fend for himself. As Jack grows up he finds out the truth about his parents deaths and vows vengeance on the two men involved, his search taken him across a Europe embattled.
This is a terrific book which uses as its background the Thirty Years War. The research is immense, from the death of Colini to the battles to the life of the Jews of Golden Age Amsterdam it really feels immersive. OK so the characterisation is lacking a little at times but the action is gripping and the story incredibly engaging. I can't wait for the next episode.… (mehr)

A gripping adventure story set during the Thirty Years War in 17thC Europe. Jean Fiskardo vows to avenge his father’s death and his journey takes him from France to Amsterdam and then on to the battlefields of Germany.

I thought this was a fabulous read. It’s a real rollercoaster of a ride. It’s fast paced and beautifully written with some wonderful and vibrant characters. I especially liked Jack/Jag/Jacques. Historical fact is combined with fiction to create a fantastic and extraordinary story. The descriptions are very vivid and the attention to detail is impressive. I could picture it easily in my mind, it has a very good sense of time and place. It’s very much a page turner, action packed. I was gripped from beginning to end and I can’t recommend it enough! I believe The Silver Wolf is the first in a planned trilogy so I’m looking forward very much to book two. I can’t wait to find out what happens to Jack Fiscardo next!… (mehr)
