Partly a history of 1900s research on astrophysics and cosmology, and partly an analysis of societal influences on this work, such as the big-and-strategic-science vision of Vannevar Bush and the role of [ugh] the military-industrial complex. Springer-Verlag's Astronomy & Astrophysics Library is excellent as is this book. It covers the basic astrophysical concepts and the math behind them with rigor. This volume covers gravity, electromagnetic processes, quantum processes, stars-- their evolution and properties, the interstellar medium and cosmology.
