- Marc D. Hauser (born 25 October 1959) is an American evolutionary biologist and a researcher in primate behavior, animal cognition and human behavior. Hauser was a Harvard University professor from 1992 to 2011, regarded as "a leader in the field of animal and human cognition".In 2011, the university found him guilty of scientific misconduct and he resigned. Because his research was financed by government grants, the US Office of Research Integrity also opened an investigation. In 2012, the investigators concluded that Hauser was guilty of research misconduct: in particular that he fabricated data for one study and falsified the results of others

animal studies and human expiriments suggest certain inborn instincts for determining limits of permisible harm and of fair play
Marc Hauser examines cognitive abilities of animals and their moral sense. He claims that some of the tools for thinking are universal, shared by all animals and humans. The universal toolkit provides animals with a basic capacity to recognize objects, count and navigate. According to Hauser, animals are not equipped with language, self awareness, higher emotions or moral instincts. Whereas by and large I find his conclusions sound, I am somewhat disappointed by the narrowness of the interpretation of the results of his experiments.

Sadly, this very enjoyable read will forever be tainted by the finding that Hauser is guilty of scientific misconduct:

Hauser inizia il libro discutendo la tradizionale visione della morale come un prodotto della cultura e dell'educazione.
