Stephen William Hawking was born in Oxford, England on January 8, 1942. He received a first class honors degree in natural science from Oxford University and a Ph.D. from Cambridge University. He was a theoretical physicist and has held the post of Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge mehr anzeigen University from 1982 until his death. In 1974, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, the world's oldest scientific organization. In 1963, he learned he had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a neuromuscular wasting disease also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. The disease confined him to a wheelchair and reduced his bodily control to the flexing of a finger and voluntary eye movements, but left his mental faculties untouched. He became a leader in exploring gravity and the properties of black holes. He wrote numerous books including A Brief History of Time: From the Big Bang to Black Holes, Black Holes and Baby Universes, On the Shoulders of Giants, A Briefer History of Time, The Universe in a Nutshell, The Grand Design, and Brief Answers to the Big Questions. In 1982, he was named a commander of the British Empire. A film about his life, The Theory of Everything, was released in 2014 and was based on his first wife Jane Hawking's book Traveling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen. Dieses kleine autobiographische Buch vermittelt eine Idee vom Leben Stephen Hawkings. Unter anderem erfährt man, dass die Schreib-Geschwindigkeit des Autors bei etwa drei Wörtern pro Minuten liegt. Es überrascht daher nicht, dass er sich nicht in ausschweifenden Beschreibungen ergeht. Die Kindheit wird schnell abgehandelt und der Schwerpunkt liegt auf den zentralen Stationen seines wissenschaftlichen Lebens. Es ist ein interessantes und lesenswertes Büchlein.
Interessant und anschaulich aber leider sehr oberflächlich. Erkenntnisse werden gut beschrieben, bildlich dargestellt aber wie man zu den Erkenntnissen gelangt ist, wird ausgelassen.
Relativitätstheorie, Unschärferelation, Quantenmechanik, Stringtheorien, Gravitation und noch so einiges mehr: Stephen Hawkings erklärt Laien aktuelle Theorien zum Entstehen des Universums. Eine letztgültige Erklärung dafür gibt es (noch) nicht, aber es ist schon spannend genug zu erfahren, dass schwarze Löcher eigentlich gar nicht schwarz sind und dass es sehr wahrscheinlich auch im materielosen Raum Materie existiert. Hawkings erklärt so simpel wie möglich, trotzdem ist es nicht ganz leicht, die unterschiedlichen Theorien zu verstehen und im eigenen Kopf zu ordnen. Trotzdem auf jeden Fall lesenswert, zumal Hawkings neben den Erkenntnissen der Physik auch Gott nach wie vor eine Rolle bei der Entstehenung des Universums zukommen lässt.… (mehr)

I was suprisingly very convinced by his arguments against God.
All his answers go into some depth which is nice, but sometimes he looses a bit track of the question and explains some other stuff which is not related to the question in first sight.
He is also witty many times.
The thing that stuck most to me is that his view on the universe is that time begun with the big bang.
Also I think it was interesting that he talks a lot about colonising space of which he thinks it is really important and that artificial intelligence will play a central role in current and future human advances.
I would recommend reading this book.… (mehr)
