Daniel Hearn

This was a good, solid, fast-moving mystery. Joe Noonan, ex-serviceman, ex-NYPD, now a private eye, waiting for clients. In walks Angela Sonderling, and quickly out. As he tries to understand her situation, and help her, and earn some money becoming a bouncer, he incurs the wrath of a small time made-man. The story moves back and forth between these stories (with touches of his private life) until a gruesome final scene. Joe Noonan is a good character, and one I'd like to see more of. Unfortunately, an Amazon search turned up only one other book by the author, Daniel Hearn (Black Light, also featuring Joe Noonan); sadly, he appears to have ceased writing. Amazon's Publisher's Weekly review noted that the story was weakened by a lack of originality, but I guess you have to have read more than I, because I didn't find it to be the case.
