7 About as well-done as its companion adaption of the Iliad, but I think I find the Odyssey just a little more tedious of a story. I’ve never loved the structure of road movies or flashback-heavy movies, and this has both of those kinds of elements. The conflict Odysseus has is like personally involved as well. A survival story where everything that happens is as arbitrary as the will of the gods doesn’t excite.

Another good adaptation from Hinds, but less of the admittedly boring bits are included—namely, the drawn-out speeches these warriors make to boast about their impressive exploits. This composes the bulk of the poem (if I recall correctly) and the story of Beowulf’s fights versus Grendel and Grendel’s mom are a much smaller part. Not that I’m dying to see the long brag sessions recreated as written in this concise adaptation, but the spirit of those was not captured.

Again quite faithful to the spirit of the text, though not in the same poetic meter (which I don’t mind, since reading it isn’t really emblematic of how it was meant to be delivered). I had forgotten as well that this story isn’t the story of the Trojan War but specifically Achilles’ spat with Agamemnon, so I was surprised to see this end after Hector’s death instead of the fall of Troy. But that’s The Iliad, so that’s what we’ve got here, too. Very good drawings and the history of the gods and the Greek culture of the time is well represented.… (mehr)

Gareth Hinds has authored a number of graphic novels from classic literature, and I had previously read his Iliad in 2019, though it was an uncolored, advance copy. The only previous familiarity I had with The Odyssey was what I have absorbed through cultural osmosis and having read Miller's Circe. For that reason I'm unable to comment on its faithfulness to the original, but it felt like a well-rounded retelling, and I enjoy Hinds' illustration style. Some chapters were flashbacks, and very occasionally I had to reorient myself to the timeline and current focal character, but on the whole I recommend both these Greek epic adaptations to fans of graphic novels.… (mehr)
