Anna and her sister adopted new names as they tried to hide in plain sight to survive the Holocaust. Ukrainian Jews, their family was rounded up when the Nazi's invaded Russia. The girls were able to escape a march to the woods that led to the murder of their parents. Piano prodigies, they spent much of the war playing music for the Nazis.
Written in verse, the story starts in response to a letter to Anna (Zannah) from her granddaughter who asks about life at her age.

A moving collection of poems about 14 young girls who had a huge impact on our world. Each woman's story is paired up with a woman illustrator to bring art alongside the informational poems. Readers will learn about women such as Ruby Bridges, Mae Jemison and Frida Kahalo along with many more. These young woman had impacts across multiple different fields. Included in the back is further reading on each of the mini biographies. Great book that children enjoy!

This biography in verse is great. The backmatter adds a lot to the story, including a note from the co-author who is Alias Anna's son!

The author did a good job capturing the voice of 13-year-old Ken. He was believable and likeable and showed maturity and kindness when things looked bleak for those on Lifeboat 12.

This novel was certainly a survival story with a difference and should appeal to young readers looking for an action-packed read. Personally, I liked all the facts, photos and information that can be found at the end of the book. Although there were some sad moments in this book, overall, "Lifeboat 12" was a story of hope and courage.… (mehr)
