Rezensionen

I love this book, and have given copies to several newcomers to Glasgow. Journalism rather than history it may be, but it provides a fascinating glimpse into the Victorian city, so much of which still survives.

This book, published in 1969, is an account of House’s walk along the River Clyde. He starts by attempting to find the source (the exact source was not certain) and continues until he reaches the Firth of Clyde and the Isle of Bute. Along the way he recounts the history of the area, points out how the landscape (human and natural) has changed, and describes his encounters with residents of the Clydeside villages and towns. The writing is of a continually droll style that I love; I was constantly chuckling at some observation or other. The book contains abundant black-and-white photos and a map at the front of the book that shows the Clyde in the broader context of Scotland.

I’d recommend this book for people who enjoy historical travelogues and would love to see someone else retrace his steps and find out how much has changed in the past 50 years.
