In the post-Civil War in the South. Virgie, the youngest in a family of boys, vows that she will accompany her brothers when they walk the seven miles to school every Monday morning. All Virgie wants is to go to school with her brothers George, Will, Nelson, Val, and C.C. But they keep saying she's too little for the long, seven-mile walk, and that girls don't need school. Nelson believes that girls need to read and write and do arithmetic too just like boys. Well, Virgie doesn't agree, and she's not gonna let anything stand in her way.… (mehr)

Good book about the distance a young girl is willing to travel with her brothers to attend school. A long wearisome 7-mile journey isn't enough of a deterrence for Virgie. Her ambitions will not be thwarted by any means, her going to school and learning is a dream and urgency. I enjoyed the story, however, I think it was contextually thin.

Reading this book brought back a lot of memories with my own grandmother. This book was about Lulu, the grandmother and her two grandchildren Laurie, and J Matthew. Lulu can't decide where she wants to celebrate her birthday at. In the past they have celebrated it at the zoo, the beach, the movies, the ball park and many more places. As Lulu and her grandchildren talk about how much fun they had celebrating their grandmother's birthday at these different places, they cannot figure out where to celebrate this birthday at. Laurie and J Matthew have an idea! They bring Lulu down stairs and SURPRISE!!!! They put together a surprise birthday party for their grandmother with all their family members there! Lulu was so surprised and this was the best birthday ever, just having her whole family there together. It remind me of times with my grandmother and how she would always spend my birthdays with me, and that was the best gift ever, because now I have those memories to look back on and forever cherish them. Lulu will now have this memory also and she too can cherish this birthday and everyone that was there to help her celebrate it.… (mehr)

Young Virgie does not get discouraged as her male siblings try to discourage her from going to school. She insists that school is just as important for girls as it is for boys and her persistence influences her parents to allow her to go to school the following school year, although she may tire by the 7 mile trek to school. Virgie endures the obstacle of the long hike with a light and ever persistent heart. Upon arrival to school she is amazed by all of the books and exited to share all that she has learned with her parents.… (mehr)
