- Else Hueck-Dehio was born in Dorpat, in the state of Livonia (Estonia), then part of the Russian Empire, to a German-Baltic family. Her father was a doctor and professor of medicine. She attended a girls' school and was privately educated in languages and literature. She trained as a nurse and worked at the Teltow District Hospital. Else fled to Berlin from her homeland in 1918 at the time of the Russian Revolution. In 1920, she married Richard Hueck, a businessman and later a Christian Democratic Union politician who served as mayor of Lüdenscheid. Beginning in 1934, she wrote numerous short stories, novels and novellas, often with themes from the countryside of her childhood.
